How Can You Avoid Neck And Shoulder Pain At Work?

When it comes to back shoulder and neck pain, the workplace is probably one of the biggest causes. Unfortunately, many people work in environments that aren't friendly to the body, particularly the spine. Pain usually happens over a period of time, and if left unchecked will get worse. Are you one of the millions who suffer from shoulder or neck pain as a result of your job?

How Does Your Job Affect Your Body?

There are multiple factors that contribute to your discomfort, and work is one of them. When people say their job is a "pain in the neck" they aren't exaggerating. One of the most common causes is simply fatigue from sitting in one position for too long, especially if you don't practice proper posture. Even if you do have good posture and an ergonomic workstation, if you sit for too long, your muscles will become fatigued and cause tension and strain, which will lead to soreness.

Often times, people don't have an ergonomic workstation, though, and this creates shoulder pain, neck pain, and other issues. Having your computer monitor too high or too low, too close or too far are small things that make a big difference. Your computer monitor should be just above eye level, and no closer than arm's length away. You should also ensure that your screen is bright enough and that there is no glare.

A simple tweak that can make a difference is having a document holder. Even if your computer monitor is set up correctly, constantly having to look down at documents will result in neck strain.

A comfortable office chair that provides adequate support for the lower back is essential to avoid slouching, which will result in pain.

Finally, it's important to take a break on a regular basis. Try to adjust positions or get up and stretch every 20 to 30 minutes.
