The rotator cuff is a set of four muscles that encompass the shoulder joint -- the supraspinatus, the infraspinatus, the teres minor and the subscapularis. These muscles are attached to the humerus (upper arm bone) and scapula (shoulder blade) via tough connective tissues called tendons. When either the muscles or their tendons sustains tears in their fibers, you have a torn rotator cuff. Repeated injury to the tendons can cause the tendons to develop chronic inflammation, or tendonitis. It's also possible for muscles to get trapped or pinched due to a misalignment in the joint.
